Alella, Catalonia
Alta Alella is the culmination of a family project that began in 1991. In that year, Josep Maria Pujol bought, together with his wife Cristina Guillén, the art-deco structure Genis. This structure, the initial centre of the winery, is located in the hilly landscape of the Serralda Natural Marine Park, between the towns of Alella and Tiana, in the Penedés near Barcelona, about 2 kilometres from the sea. Wine production has been widespread here since Roman times. In 1991, the company planted its first vines and recovered vineyards that were more than 60 years old; 10 years later, it began the production of still wine followed by classic method sparkling wines. Right from the start, Alta Alella's entire production is based on certified organic practices, thus preserving and enhancing the biodiversity of the surrounding natural park. The winery today boasts an area of 17 hectares spread over terraces and slopes at an altitude of 100-250 metres above sea level. The peculiarity, in addition to being immersed in a natural park 2 km from the sea, is that all the vines are located on 'Sauló' soil, a white granite, sandy and acidic soil with a low lime content, low organic matter and low water retention.
organic matter and low water retention. Harvesting is carried out by hand by carefully checking the
maturity of the grapes, looking for the optimal time to harvest. The winery works with microvinifications
producing up to fifty different wines for blending the cuvées of each vintage.
