Saint Emilion, Bordeaux
First Casteau Dauzone, then Château Dosone and finally Château Ausone, a tribute to the Latin poet (and statesman) who loved Bordeaux, and the nectar produced here, to which he dedicated several works. Ausonius was born in these lands and owned around 100 hectares. Legend has it that Chateau Ausone stands on them.
The Saint Emilion vineyards boast perfect exposure, facing south, and are laid out on steep terraces.
Ausone consists of 7 hectares and is located on a hilly slope known as Roc Blancan (White Rock), characterised by very stony soil, a favourite habitat for local vines.
The estate as we know it dates back to the 18th century when the owner was Jean Cantenat. It was then inherited by Edouard Dubois who led it through the difficulties of the time, also acquiring the neighbouring Chateau Belar. The wines have been maturing in the Ausone cellars, inside underground limestone caves, ever since.
In 1921 Edouard died, and was succeeded by his wife and natural children from another marriage, who later became related to the Vauthier family, today the sole owners of the Chateau.
Although the Chateau has always been considered one of the great names of Bordeaux, it has gone through the decades with alternating fortunes, until the great union, that with the oenologist Pascal Delbeck in 1976.
The winery is biodynamically run, which is not uncommon in Bordeaux, and produces wines with a traditional flavour that speak to you of Saint Emilion with every sip. Iconic.
