Emidio Pepe
Contrada Chiesi, Torano, Abruzzo From father to son, the history of the Pepe winery began at the end of the 19th century with Emidio Pepe Senior, the grandfather of the current owner, who began to cultivate the region's two main grape varieties, Montepulciano and Trebbiano. The story continued with Giuseppe in 1944 and dulcis in fundo with Emidio Junior in 1964, in a crescendo of appreciation throughout Italy. We are in the middle of the Torano hills where making wine is a family affair, everyone makes their contribution in this winery that has now converted to biodynamic. There are 15 hectares and after more than 50 harvests Emidio is a true guarantee of expression of terroir, exalting it to incredible levels and now recognised as one of the greatest producers in the world. Here, everything is manual, systemic chemistry in the vineyard is repudiated with contempt and the only treatments that are carried out consist of homeopathic doses of copper crystals, sulphur far below organic limits and the use of biodynamic preprations. This is completed by a vision of a clean cellar, with spontaneous fermentation from indigenous yeasts, little addition of sulphur and use of cement instead of wood. An absolute answer to the detractors of natural wine and the fanatics of semantics. Emidio Pepe is a genius and his wines are amazing, sparkling pearls.
