Kekfrankos is a red grape variety that is mainly cultivated in Austria, Germany and Hungary where it gives rise to the famous Blood Blend. It is also known by other names, the most famous being Blaufränkisch, but also Frankovka and Francova. It is capable of producing wines that are deep, complex and suitable for ageing, characterised by high acidity, firm tannins and flavours of dark fruits such as blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry. These may also have notes of dried herbs, tobacco and cocoa powder. The grape usually lends itself to ageing in oak barrels in order to further enhance its complexity, structure and flavour profile. Kekfrankos, or Francovka, is truly a versatile grape variety with which one can produce wines of very different styles, from carefree and easy-drinking to full-bodied and robust.
