Monyok

The Monyok Winery was founded in 1972 by the father of the current owner Norbert Monyok. The estate is 18 hectares located on the slopes historically known for the cultivation of some of the best cru of Tokaji: Nyulaszo - Betsek - Donzka. Four varieties are cultivated: Hárslevelű (30%) - Furmint (30%) - Sárgamuskotály (30%) - Oremus (10%). The Monyok cellar has an area of 1500 square metres and extends 600 metres along tunnels up to 20 metres deep. These cellars typical of the area have the characteristic of having constant year-round temperatures around 11° and humidity around 90-95 %, which allows the slow fermentation of the wines/ musts and the formation of a particular mould that permeates all the walls, giving the wines their characteristic aroma. Located in the far north-eastern of Hungary, the Tokaji region is protected to the north by the Carpathian and Zemplen mountains, while to the south lies the great Hungarian plain. The hills of Tokaj are very high and touch 700 metres, the vineyards extend from 200 to to 400 metres; two rivers, the Bodrog and the Tisza, surround the area and are responsible for the humidity that in autumn is essential for the formation of noble rot. The climate is continental, very hot in summer and mild in autumn, with humid winds coming from the south; winters are very cold.
