Alta Alella is the culmination of a family project that began in 1991. In that year Josep Maria Pujol purchased, together with his wife Cristina Guillén, the art-deco structure Genis. This structure, the initial center of the company, is located in the hilly landscape of the Serralda Marine Natural Park, between the towns of Alella and Tiana, in the Penedés near Barcelona about 2 kilometers from the sea. Here wine production has been widespread since Roman times. In 1991 the company planted the first vines and recovered vineyards that were over 60 years old; 10 years later the production of still wine began followed by classic method sparkling wines. From the outset, the entire production of Alta Alella is based on certified organic practices, so as to conserve and enhance the biodiversity of the surrounding natural park. The company today boasts an area of 17 hectares distributed on terraces and slopes at an altitude of 100-250 meters above sea level. The peculiarity, in addition to being immersed in a natural park 2 km from the sea, is to have all the vines positioned on the ground “Sauló”, a white, sandy and acidic granite soil with low limestone content and little matter
organic and low water retention. The harvest is carried out by hand through careful controls of the
maturity of the grapes, looking for the optimal time for harvesting. The cellar works with micro-vinifications
producing up to fifty different wines for blending each vintage’s cuvées.
