Saint Emilion, Bordeaux
First Casteau Dauzone, then Château Dosone and finally Château Ausone, a tribute to the Latin poet (and statesman) who loved Bordeaux and the nectar produced here, to which he dedicated several works. Ausonio was born in these lands and owned about 100 hectares. Legend has it that Chateau Ausone was built right inside them.
The Saint Emilion vineyards can boast perfect exposure, facing south, and are arranged on steep terraces.
Ausone consists of 7 hectares and is located on a hilly slope known as Roc Blancan (White Rock), characterized by very stony soil, a favorite habitat for local vineyards.
The estate as we know it dates back to the 18th century. when the owner was Jean Cantenat. It was then inherited by Edouard Dubois who led it through the difficulties of that time, also purchasing the neighboring Chateau Belar. Since then, the wines have been aging in the Ausone cellars, inside underground limestone caves.
In 1921 Edouard died, he was succeeded by his wife and natural children from another marriage, who later became related to the Vauthiers, today the sole owners of the Castle.
The Chateau, although it has always been considered one of the great names of Bordeaux, has gone through the decades with alternating fortunes, until the great union with the winemaker Pascal Delbeck in 1976.
The company is biodynamically run, which is now not uncommon in Bordeaux, it produces wines with a traditional flavor that tell you about Saint Emilion with every sip. Iconic.
