Châteauneuf du Pape is an iconic red wine from Clos des Papes in the Cote du Rhone town of the same name. It is made from Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and other grapes permitted in the specification that macerate for about a month in open vats; fermented in wood not of first passage and aged here for between 12 and 15 months. Finally, they rest in the bottle for two years. Châteauneuf du Pape It displays hints of very ripe fruit, spicy and balsamic notes on the nose, and is powerful and elegant on the palate, soft with silky tannin. We find it perfect in combination with venison

Châteauneuf-du-Pape - Côte du Rhone

The Clos des Papes has belonged to the Avril family since 1600, but it was in 1911, when Paul Avril contributed
decisive for the creation of the appellation Châteauneuf du Pape, that the company was further consolidated and
reached its current size of 40 hectares divided into 24 plots around the city and one of these is a
'clos' next to the Château des Papes and hence the name Clos des Papes. The winery has been certified organic since 2011. The secret of the high quality of the estate's wines is the low yields. The wines are not filtered. Today it is the great-grandson Paul-
Vincent Avril to lead the 'Domaine'.

The Châteauneuf du Pape red is the 90% from the estate's production and is aged in barrels for 12 to 15 months, while the white ferments and matures in steel.

The history of Châteauneuf du Pape wine is linked to the presence of the Popes from 1309 onwards; during their
permanence in Avignon, the Popes built a castle, as a summer residence, 25 km north of the city
where, thanks to favourable conditions, they began to grow grapes.

Today, the vineyards cover an area of 3300 hectares; the soil is thin and composed of layers of Miocene 'Galet' pebbles that retain heat during the day and return it at night.

Another particularity of Châteauneuf du Pape are the numerous grape varieties used (up to thirteen).
For red: Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault, Counoise, Terret Noir, Vaccarèse, Muscardin. For the white:
White Grenache, Roussanne, Clarette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Picardan.

The percentages of grape varieties used can be at the discretion of each winery, resulting in a variety of different styles and characteristics among the various producers.

Their reds, often harsh in their youth, age very well developing magnificent intensities
aromatic, while the rare whites, already rich in their youth, develop exotic aromas sometimes recalling the
orange peel.
