Saint Remy de Provence, France

Imagine a soft slope at the foot of the Alpilles where the Mistral wind blows, between Avignon and the Rhone Valley...this is the Domaine Des Terres Blanches, located in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where thyme, rosemary and lavender grow alongside the vines. Founded in 1968 by Noel Michelin on his return from his work experiences in Indochina and Cameroon. It was on his return to France that he decided, after seeing a disproportionate use of pesticides and herbicides, to use only natural and environmentally sustainable methods to cultivate his vines.
At that time, well before the advent of the 'Bio' movement, Bordeaux mixture, seaweed and plant essences were used to combat vine diseases. During the winter, cereals and pulses were planted between the rows of vines to naturally enrich the soil. This continues today with the new ownership, which since 2012 has brought an Alsatian family to continue the tradition in this area of France.

The location of the Domaine des Terres Blanches is among the best, the Mistral prevents frost and fungal attacks. In addition to this, the
area enjoys over 2900 hours of daylight per year and low rainfall. The soil on which the vines grow is varied with areas rich in clay, limestone, silica, shale and in some places even red clay. During the winter, the clods of soil are turned over to prevent excessive compaction and to give the roots of the plants more aeration.

Several varieties are cultivated in the Domaine, including Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Marsanne Roussanne and others typical of the region.
