Sotillo de la Ribera, Ribera del Duero, Castilla y Leon
In the region of old Castilla, north of Segovia along the Douro river and its tributaries lies one of the
historically and qualitatively most important denominations in Spain; it is probably the most responsible for the qualitative factor of the region located on a plateau at around 800 m. of altitude.
The climate is harsh continental in winter and hot, dry in summer, but it is the temperature range between day and night that makes it so peculiar. In summer during the day, temperatures can reach 35°C while at night the temperature can drop to 6°C, determining the formation of aromas and freshness in the wines.
The main grape variety of the region is Tempranillo, locally known as “Tinto Fino or Tinta del Pais”, small quantities of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot are also grown.
The company was founded by Félix Callejo in 1989 in Sottillo del Duero, the heart of the region. Mr. Callejo carries out this project which was born much further back than when his grandfather Faustino and his father Felix started the business as winemakers.
The property consists of 100 hectares of vineyard, almost all of which is cultivated with Tempranillo at an altitude of 850-930 m, with excellent
exhibitions.
The harvest is carried out manually as is the subsequent selection of the bunches aimed at obtaining perfect quality of the fermenting grapes. All parcels are harvested separately and fermentations take place with the use of indigenous yeasts, thanks to which more authentic wines with greater personality can be obtained.
The subsequent aging in French oak is carried out in such a way as to respect the characteristics as much as possible
organoleptic characteristics of wine.
Since 1999, Félix Callejo has also been able to count on the help of his son Jose’, an oenologist with work experience in the cellars of Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux and Michel Torres in Chile; later the youngest daughter, Noelia, an oenologist, also joined the company after having gained experience in companies in California and Argentina; Daughters Cristina and Beatriz take care of exports and marketing.
