It’s difficult to imagine, but until the beginning of the twentieth century Piedmontese wines tended to be sweet; this is for commercial reasons, being more stable when transported by ship, and for technical reasons, given that Nebbiolo is a vine that ripens late and the Pied de Cuve technique ( allows the development of native yeasts for fermentation) was not well known.
This was until the French winemaker Louis Oudart glimpsed the stigmata of the champion in Nebbiolo and therefore decided to give life to Barolo with the help of Count Camillo Benso.
Piedmont is known for its great reds, but it also produces excellent whites and sparkling wines, whose common characteristic lies in the fact that they are almost all monovarietal, that is, produced using a single grape variety. Think of Barolo, Barbaresco or Derthona Timorasso.
The vineyards cover approximately 50,000 hectares of vineyards with a yield of almost 3 million hectolitres.
The Langhe are located near the city of Alba, on the right bank of the Tanaro river and also including the Barolo and Barbaresco areas. The most cultivated grapes are Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera.
