Viticulture in New Zealand is a relatively recent practice, in fact it dates back to less than 200 years ago, to the period in which there was the English colonization of Captain James Cook.
The first vine in Kerikeri, in the North Island, dates back to this period.
It was only at the end of the 1980s that New Zealand wines rose to international prominence.
As in most territories in the world, the nineteenth century was also characterized by powdery mildew and phylloxera, which pushed New Zealanders to breed Franco-American hybrids (Maco Noie and Isabella grapes) notoriously resistant to diseases.
The history between New Zealand and wine was also troubled for cultural reasons.
Only in 1960 did companies obtain legal permission to sell their wine to hotels and restaurants.
The first vineyard of European vines is located in Marlborough, planted in 1973.
Today in New Zealand cult wines are produced from Sauvignon and Chardonnay grapes.
