The history of wine in the New World (Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) is fairly recent, especially when compared to that of the Northern Hemisphere; it is marked by a few precise dates, the first being 1659 when the East India Company entrusted Jan Van Rieebek with the organisation and supervision of the first vineyard field in South Africa; later, in 1685, the Dutch Company Governor Simon Van der Stel acquired a vast estate of over 750 hectares in the area we now know as Constantia.
1712 was the year of the first high quality productions thanks to Johan Colijn and Hendrik Cloete; 1859 is the year that the world will remember as the year of the first export of wine from the New World to the United Kingdom.
In Australia and New Zealand, wine came later. In both cases the Movement was born as a result of colonisation, and was only able to market its products in the 1960s.
