Petra Cavallo is the name of this legendary farm whose history is incredible and covers around 800 years of history. In the early days it seems that one of the first travelers to find refreshment here was Saint Francis of Assisi, in the summer of 1022, returning from Egypt, who left an imprint of his face on the stone he used to sleep.
In 1809, coinciding with the suppression of the religious orders desired by Murat, the farm passed from the hands of the Conventual Fathers to those of Baron Ferdinando Notaristefano. The Baron was so devoted that he changed the name of the estate to San Francesco.
In 1861, the estate was already in possession of a D’Onghia, to be precise Giuseppe, municipal tax collector of Mottola, but not far away was the hideout of the bandits led by Coppolone. The myth goes that one day, after having given refuge to a gualano from the farm who had been humiliated in public by Giuseppe, he decided to break into the tax collector’s house. Patron Joseph was kidnapped and hung from an ant-infested tree until the ransom was delivered. Since that day the courtyard of the farm has been closed.
In 1922 Petra Cavallo (San Francesco) was sold to the Leogrande brothers, who divided the estate between them. The northern part to Gennaro, the southern part to Giuseppe. Meanwhile, the company’s agricultural (and livestock) activities became increasingly important, significantly increasing production.
In this period a new strange event occurred: turkeys were born crippled and died like flies. This was attributed to the fact that the church of the farm, now deconsecrated and abandoned, was used for brooding turkeys. From that day the church was reconsecrated and the phenomenon disappeared.
After the Second World War, Masseria San Francesco was renovated and enlarged; the Leogrande brothers, now old, in 1958 granted the management of the entire local economy to their children, in order not to officially split it up.
Three families related to each other now live here: that of Diego Ludovico, that of Maddalena D’Onghia and that of Giuseppe D’Onghia, father of Vito, the deus ex machina of Petracavallo’s natural wine production.
Here it is produced according to tradition, without pesticides, additives, selected yeasts, controlled temperatures or exaggerated additions of sulfur dioxide.
Petracavallo wines are alive, territorial and exciting.
