Ghemme, Piedmont
The Platinetti Agricultural Company is located in the Municipality of Ghemme whose origins are very ancient; in fact, some settlements in this area can even be traced back to the Neolithic period.
At the time of Pliny the Elder it was repeatedly cited with the name of “Pagus Agaminus” from which the ancient “Agamium” derives, today
Ghemme. The vine in Ghemme has been cultivated since time immemorial and the history is very rich in anecdotes and testimonies; one above all deserves to be mentioned: Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour asserted that Ghemme wines are among the Piedmontese wines, those that most resemble the great “Pinot Noir” of Burgundy. This belief of his is based on the conformation and composition of the soils of the moraine hills of Ghemme, very similar to those of Burgundy, as well as the continental climate with strong temperature variations between day and night.
Today Andrea Fontana and his brother, descendants of Guido Platinetti, their maternal grandfather, manage the company. We cannot talk about the company without talking about Ronco Maso, 3.5 hectares, where Ghemme is produced by selecting grapes from the highest part of the vineyard. The Ronco Maso is a ferritized pebbly fluvio-glacial terrace, originally formed by the slow flow of the Monte Rosa glacier and subsequently by the Sesia river which initially flowed right under the Ronco Maso and only later, over the course of millennia, moved its bed towards west.
The presence of high concentrations of minerals, especially of ferrous origin, and the small presence of organic substance in the soil are ideal for vines whose roots are naturally forced to push towards the deep layers in search of nutrients and minerals, bringing this gives complexity, minerality and unique characteristics to the resulting wines.
The South-West exposure allows the plants to receive the sun throughout the day and the orientation of the rows
retouching allows you to contain sunburn on the bunches during the hottest hours. The breeding system is a
Guyot. Spontaneous grassing has been practiced for about 30 years which, in addition to establishing a habitat rich in
biodiversity in the vineyard, allows you to prevent soil leaching phenomena and to work safely with
mechanical means.
The average age of the vines is over 40 years for the southern vineyard and over 30 for the one located to the north. All fermentations are spontaneous and the sulfur dosages are very low.
