The Biondi Santi family is famous for having invented Brunello di Montalcino in the second half of the nineteenth century, one of the symbolic wines of Made in Italy. The story begins with Clemente Santi, who at the Tenuta Greppo vinified pure Sangiovese and in 1869 introduced the term “Brunello”. His nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi produced the first bottle of Brunello in 1888 and created the brand by combining the surnames of his father and mother.

After Ferruccio’s death, his son Tancredi Biondi Santi took command until 1970, becoming a great innovator. In addition to improving the quality of the wine, he invented the refilling process, which consisted of checking and refilling the old Reserves to maintain their quality. Furthermore, in the 1960s, Tancredi wrote the rules for the denomination of Brunello, officially obtained in 1967. His Brunello Riserva 1955 was the only Italian wine to enter the list of the best wines of the 20th century, and was also served to the Queen Elizabeth II.

The Tenuta Castello di Montepò by Jacopo Biondi Santi is a modern and innovative wine project in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, based on the tradition and experience of the Biondi Santi family in the world of wine and Sangiovese, in particular the BBS11 clone. The vineyards, covering 50 hectares, are cultivated between 250 and 560 meters above sea level, with sustainable methods and attention to the terroir. Production is based on controlled fermentation in steel and aging in barrels and barriques in the cellar under the castle. The wines, such as “Sassoalloro”, “Schidione” and the Morellino di Scansano “Castello di Montepò”, are characterized by defined contours, fine bouquet and taste balance.

The “Sassoalloro” is an elegant and territorial red that represents Jacopo Biondi Santi’s vision for the wines of Castello di Montepò. This selected Sangiovese was grown near Scansano and vinified in steel. Maturation lasts over a year in barrique and then in the bottle. The wine has an intense and brilliant ruby ​​color, fruity and spicy aromas of cherry and raspberry, with balsamic and aromatic herbal notes. In the mouth it is soft and fresh, with well integrated tannins. It goes well with first courses with ragù, grilled meats and mature cheeses.
