With only 20,000 hectares of vines (pre-phylloxera they were three times as many) and not even 1 million hectoliters of annual production, Slovenia can count on a very high number of wineries, around 30,000, and one of the highest per capita consumption in the world.
As happened throughout Europe, it was the Romans who brought the vine to Slovenia, and in conjunction with the decline of the Roman Empire, Slovenian viticulture also fell into crisis, only to recover definitively from the twelfth century onwards when more productive vineyards and lands they found themselves in the hands of the Catholic Church, the aristocracy and the emerging bourgeois class. And it was like this for many centuries.
Similarly to neighboring Friuli, the production mainly concerns white wines, and since the 1990s it can be stated without risk of contradiction that Slovenian wines are establishing themselves at very high levels of medium quality.
