With only 20,000 hectares under vine (three times as many before Phylloxera) and not even 1 million hectolitres of annual production, Slovenia can count on a very high number of wineries, around 30,000, and one of the highest per capita consumption in the world.
As was the case throughout Europe, it was the Romans who brought vines to Slovenia, and with the decline of the Roman Empire, Slovenian wine-growing fell into crisis, only to recover from the 12th century onwards when more productive vineyards and land became the property of the Catholic Church, the aristocracy and the emerging middle class. And so it was for many centuries.
Similarly to neighbouring Friuli, production is mainly of white wines, and since the 1990s it is safe to say that Slovenian wines are establishing themselves at a very high level of average quality.
