Vinas Mora

Primosten, Croatia Vinas Mora is the beautiful story of the encounter between Niko and Kreso, two experienced winegrowers, who find refuge in Primosten, between Split and Sibernik, during the first lockdown. They fall in love with the potential of the area, which they see as a chance to create a fantastic terroir to export. Vinas Mora means more or less sea wines, with vines trained on albarello vines on soil that our friends describe as lunar, such is the harshness of the local rock. The plots are truly curious and must be contextualised in a region where it never rains from April to October and very little in the remaining months, with plenty of wind on the side. They seem to be planted in a leopard's spot, each with vines that can be counted on the fingers of one hand, as if they were micro hillside clusters. The vines are at least 100 years old and boast a yield of half a kilo per plant, practically nothing. At Vinas Mora everything is done by hand and in the most natural way possible, with spontaneous fermentations and homeopathic additions of sulphur dioxide. Chemistry is banned in the vineyard, and given the delicacy of the plants, it could not be otherwise. Chemistry does not help the plants, it kills them. Croatia is the cradle of viticulture in the Mediterranean, but vines have been disappearing, especially in the last century, in favour of rampant tourism. It is up to good producers like Niko and Kreso to bring Croatia back to being a popular destination for wine trips.
