Weingut Van Volxem

Wiltingen, Germany We are located in the most important municipality in the valley of the river Saar, itself the most celebrated of the Moselle's tributaries, a stone's throw from the Vosges mountains. The owner of the winery is the very tall Roman Niewodniczanski, a two-metre tall man who loves good wine and natural production, who took over the winery in 2000 from the Van Volxem family, at that time in its fourth generation of winegrowers. In 2004, the current General Manager, Dominik Völk, arrived, and this marked a real turning point; the duo laid the foundations of what this wonderful Saar estate is now: a point of reference for all white wine lovers in the world. The Van Volxem estate has as its central building a Jesuit monastery, renovated by Roman, overlooking an enchanting view of the Saar Valley and the estate's 65 hectares of vineyards. Roman's approach to viticulture and wine production, as mentioned, is completely natural, driven by the conviction that chemistry has destroyed the concept of wine and worsened its quality. The company philosophy rests on a certainty, that a tradition rooted over millennia cannot be improved by technological upheaval. Here, as is evident, great wines are born from late harvests, hand-selected grapes and loyalty to the land, from respect for the old free-standing vines and the cold that characterises the entire region.
