Isla de Maipo, Chile
Since 1934 and for four generations, the De Martino family has specialized in the production of wines that are an expression of the terroir, of great purity and balance. The company practices sustainable agriculture, traditional winemaking with indigenous yeasts, thus obtaining wines that represent a faithful reflection of the vineyards from which they come.
It is commonplace to think of Chile as a recent reality in the global viticultural panorama, while the vine has been cultivated in Chile for centuries, ever since the Spanish conquistadors, in Five hundred, they brought the first vines from Spain. The vine used then was the “Pais”, an uninteresting variety for quality wines currently still used for base wines or to produce “Pisco”. A few years later, with the introduction of new Bordeaux vines such as Cabernet-Sauvignon, Carmenere and Merlot, the quality of the wines improved significantly. Modern qualitative development began in 1980, thanks to massive new investments that improved winemaking technologies. Today, 130,000 hectares of vines are cultivated.
From a geographical point of view, Chile seems like a paradise created for the cultivation of vines. From the capital Santiago, valleys branch out for 100 km to the north and 400 km to the south, which descend from the Andes towards the sea; Maipo, Rapel, Curicò, Maule, each with its own river, terrain, microclimate. The general climate is also ideal for the vine: the rain falls mainly in winter, while the dry summer does not favor the development of mold and parasites. The Andean and sea breezes further sanitize the grapes.
Protected to the north by the Atacama Desert, to the east by the Andean chain and to the south by the Antarctic glaciers, Chile has remained free from phylloxera which devastated the vineyards at the end of the 19th century Europeans. Thanks to this, Chilean vines develop on their own roots, guaranteeing a great advantage in quality and longevity compared to grafted ones. This explains the success of Carmenere which arrived in Chile in 1800 before phylloxera completely destroyed it in Bordeaux. Today Carmenere can be considered the true native Chilean grape variety. White grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon are also cultivated and in the colder southern districts, Gewurztraminer and Riesling are also grown.
The De Martino family, of Italian origins, has been producing wine in the Maipo valley since 1934, when Pietro De Martino arrived from Genoa with the precise aim of making the wine. The company, still family-owned, owns 300 hectares of vineyards, including the prestigious and peculiar vineyards on the Maipo river which, thanks to its ventilated climate and alluvial gravelly subsoil, makes the wines very concentrated and of great balance.
Always animated by a pioneering spirit, the young De Martinos have been following a “terroir” zoning project for eight years to acquire vineyards in the most suitable territories: Limari, Choapa , Casablanca, Colchagua and Maule. De Martino also owns the Santa Ines company also in Maipo, which boasts a long tradition in the production of Carmenere. In 1996 De Martino was the first company in Chile to label this wine which has now become the standard-bearer of Chile
