Aloxe Corton, Burgundy
The Domaine Maurice Chapuis is first of all a “family domain”, as the owners like to define themselves, it is located in the village of Aloxe Corton, where the historic “Charlemagne” vineyard that belonged to Charlemagne is located.
The company began way back in 1850 when a small worker “Vigneron” Pierre Pavelot bought about 1 hectare of vineyard in Aloxe Corton. A few years later, together with his brother, he purchased about half a hectare of vineyard right in the Grand Cru of Charlemagne. Pierre’s only daughter, Marie, will marry a Chapuis; since then Eugène, Maurice, Louis have handed down the management of the company which still today is managed by his nephew Maurice with his good and enterprising wife Anne-Marie.
The Domaine has a vineyard area of 12 hectares, almost all in the municipality of Aloxe Corton but also in Savigny Les Beaune and Chorey Les Beaune. The Aloxe Corton hill is unique in Burgundy, both because it is detached from the main ridge of the hills, and because it has very mineral soils, dizzying slopes, full southern exposures and a very particular microclimate; all this determines in the wines a very important aromatic olfactory heritage and a very thick gustatory aspect with fat, mineral and very long-lived wines.
Aloxe Corton is known worldwide above all for “Charlemagne” (Chardonnay), but it must be said that the red wines also express themselves at the highest levels of Burgundy. The company is
conducted under a rational agriculture regime.
