Intellego Syrah 2021

Intellego Syrah is a red wine produced by Jurgen Gouws of Intellego, in Swartland, a region of South Africa. It is the company’s Signature Wine, the first label created. It is made exclusively from Syrah grapes, which Jurgen fell in love with when he worked in the Côte Rôtie. The grapes come from vines planted in 1999 on granite soil, whole bunch semi-carbonic maceration for 10 days and aging in 500 liter barrels for 10 months. The mouth is fresh and vibrant, bright while the nose is varied, with floral and spicy hints. A fusion of personality and finesse. Try it with lamb!

  The grapes come from vines planted on granite soil in 1999, they are harvested by hand and undergo semi-carbonic whole-bunch fermentation for approximately 10 days. Subsequently they refine for 10 months in 500 liter wooden barrels of various passages

Hints of lavender and violet, then dark berries and earthy notes arrive, finishing with mineral and sweet spice notes

Intellego is the creation of Jurgen Gouws, and was founded in 2015. Jurgen is a young producer with vast experience behind him, gained from collaboration with very large companies around the world.

We talk in particular about Terroir al Limit in the Priorato and Matassa, in the Languedoc (both present on Apewineboxes) and about further experiences between France, New Zealand and Russia.

From 2010 to 2014 he worked in Lammershoek, side by side with the most visionary producer in all of Swartland, Craig Hawkins who obviously influenced his style.

Intellego’s philosophy involves minimal intervention during the winemaking process.

The work in the vineyard could be defined as intuitive viticulture, an evolution through experimentation on small plots of land selected in the Swartland Appellation.

Jurgen’s true passion is the work that takes place in the vineyard, practical, understanding seasonal influences and adapting based on constant observation of the terroir.

The big goal is to create optimal soil conditions through organic practices in which the vines will be grown for an indefinite period of time. By putting in place the conditions so that each block has its own individual character and grows in a beneficial environment for the plant and its roots.
