The annual production is close to 3 million hectolitres thanks to the almost 60000 hectares of vineyards, mostly located in hilly areas, where the vine finds the right environment to express itself at its best and give wines of very high average quality; the training systems are very varied, the most typical of which are the Tuscan bow and the Guyot with spurred cordon.
The areas of excellence in the region are: Montalcino, Chianti Classico, Bolgheri, Montepulciano, Carmignano and San Gimignano.
Viticulture has been present in the area since Etruscan times, but it was only in the Middle Ages that wine production began to be continued; in 1282 the Guild of Winemakers was founded, and in 1300 the famous Black Rooster, the symbol of Chianti Classico, appeared for the first time.
In 1960, Tuscany achieved its definitive consecration at world level thanks to the Super Tuscans, complex, harmonious, structured wines produced using the great internationals to which Sangiovese was added.
