Sotillo de la Ribera, Ribera del Duero, Castilla y Leon

In the region of old Castilla, north of Segovia along the river Duero and its tributaries lies one of the
historically and qualitatively most important appellations in Spain; it is probably the most responsible for the quality factor in the region located on a plateau at an altitude of around 800 metres.

The climate is continental cold in winter and hot dry in summer, but it is the temperature range between day and night that makes it so distinctive. In summer during the day, temperatures as high as 35°C can be reached, while at night the temperature can drop as low as 6°C, resulting in aromas and freshness in the wines.

The region's main grape variety is Tempranillo, known locally as 'Tinto Fino or Tinta del Pais', small quantities of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot are also cultivated.

The company was founded by Félix Callejo in 1989 in Sottillo del Duero, the heart of the region. Mr Callejo realises this project that goes back much further since his grandfather Faustino and his father Felix started the business as winegrowers.
The property is 100 hectares of vineyards, almost all planted with Tempranillo at an altitude of 850-930 metres, with excellent
expositions.

Harvesting is done manually, as is the subsequent selection of the bunches of grapes in order to obtain the perfect quality of the fermenting grapes. All plots are harvested separately and fermentation takes place with the use of indigenous yeasts, thanks to which more authentic wines with greater personality can be obtained.
Subsequent ageing in French oak is carried out in such a way as to respect as far as possible the characteristics
organoleptic properties of the wine.

Since 1999, Félix Callejo has also been able to count on the help of his son José, an oenologist with experience working in the cellars of Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux and Michel Torres in Chile; later, his youngest daughter, Noelia, an oenologist after gaining experience in companies in California and Argentina, joined the company; her daughters Cristina and Beatriz are in charge of export and marketing.
