The company Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two Norwegians, Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn. In 1880 Theodor Wiese decided to sell his shares to his partner Dankert Krohn while remaining with the company as export manager; his work in developing foreign markets and especially the Norwegian market was such that the company grew considerably.
Dankert Krohn died in 1906 and after several changes of ownership, in 1921 Edmundo Falcao Carneiro, an export manager who had already been working in the company since 1910, bought it. Today, the Carneiro family is in its third generation in running the winery. The company owns an important property called 'Quinta do Retiro Novo' located in the Rio Torto valley, a noble area of the Douro.
From this 'Quinta' come the wines for Port Vintage, Late Bottled Vintage and Colheita. Wiese & Krohn owns approx.
five million litres of wine stored to mature in six cellars in and around Vila Nova de Gaia.
