Natural Wine or Natural Wine?

The question is natural wine or wine au naturel?

Have you only heard about natural wine in the last few years and thought it was a fad? Nothing could be more wrong, it is a philosophy of life as well as the best expression of wine there is!

Natural Wine

Before I leave you with my opinion on the question of the article, I would like to quickly introduce you to the subject of how to produce a natural wine.

Natural wine is an artisanal wine produced with a minimum of human intervention. It starts in the vineyard, where the use of copper sulphate is permitted up to 4 kg per hectare. Most producers of this type of wine, however, remain well below this threshold, at around 2 kg per hectare. Studies are underway to experiment with new and even less invasive techniques for approaching the vineyard.

Good practice consists of incorporating the following into the vineyard ecosystem leguminous plants which act as nitrogen regulators in the soil, in order to ensure full and sustainable production. Another practice, in use in the biodynamic viticultureis that of the use of absolutely natural preparationsbased on flowers and herbs, to be dispensed on plants. Finally, the trend is to create a true ecosystem plants, as we have seen, and insects, to protect the whole vineyard and keep it healthy.

In the cellar

In the winery, chemistry is even more repudiated. In fact, on the cuticle of a naturally bred grape we find many substances including yeasts and antioxidants.

We can also find so-called native yeasts directly in the cellar, on the walls, in the pipes, in the tanks and also in the barrels. These, in conjunction with temperatures that are normally between 20 and 24 degrees, contribute to the start of the spontaneous fermentation of wine.

The result is a more genuine and typical wine, to which, because of the antioxidants in the skin of the grapes, chemical additives based on organic substances should not normally be added. sulfur dioxide, i sulfites note. After the ageing period, the wine is ready to be bottled and enjoyed.

So is it natural wine or wine au naturel?

This is a good question! It is customary to talk about natural wine more often, but the reality is that there is a minimum of human participation. The grapes are selected, then manipulated for racking and finally transported to the vats where the process will continue, also using winery techniques such as reassembly or battonage.

I therefore propose to define this wine as naturally produced or au naturel.
